Chauvin
Guides is a small guide service in North Conway, NH specializing in
custom guiding with individuals, couples or small groups of friends.
Marc Chauvin will be your guide in most cases while Jay Philbrick
teaches most of the avalanches courses.
There
are a wide variety of trips that are possible during the winter in the
White Mountains of NH that use a variety of climbing and mountaineering
skills. The White Mountains have steep technical ice and mixed climbing,
basic crampon and ice axe use on open above tree line slopes, multi-day
mountaineering hikes, backcountry skiing and moderate snowshoe hikes.
The White Mountains have been the training ground for many world
class mountaineers as well as a destination climbing area with some
of the best ice climbing in the contiguous US and of course Mount Washington's
unique combination of accessibility and severe winter weather.
Below
you will find some ideas of things we can do. Seeing that you or your
group will be the only participants, I can and prefer to adapt theses
ideas to your unique situation taking into account your strengths, goals
and preferences along with the all important weather and conditions.
I
enjoy talking with people and helping them plan a way to combine guided
trips with personal trips to accomplish their goals and develop their
skills in the mountains. Give me a call at 603-356-8919. My office
is in my home so calling in the evening is often best seeing I am out
climbing and teaching most days.

Avalanche
Courses
detailed
info on courses
CGI is teaching and sponsoring a full avalanche curriculum this season.
The Level I course is for recreational users and covers; interpreting
avalanche forecasts, route finding, use of beacons, and rescue procedures.
The Level II course is for those who want to delve more into the science
of the snowpack. This course develops observer skills and is a must
for anyone considering any type of professional outdoor winter work
in avalanche terrain.
If you are shopping for an avalanche course CGI recommends that you
at least ask the following question of potential course providers. Will
everyone in the course be required to wear an avalanche transceiver?
If your course will be going into avalanche terrain (Tuckerman
Ravine, for example) and the provider doesn't require or provide
transceivers for everyone, consider finding another avalanche course!

Two-Day
Mountaineering Course
This two-day course is for people who have little or no experience with
crampons or ice axe. Previous technical climbing experience is not necessary.
If you are interested in above tree line winter hiking, skiing the steeps,
or climbing volcanoes like those in the Cascades or Mexico, this curriculum
will focus on climbing techniques that are often needed for these trips.
We
start by covering the basics of crampon and ice axe use on the first
day at Willey's Slide in Crawford Notch. Our second day we will climb
in either Huntington or Tuckerman Ravine where we will learn more about
snow and ice climbing as well as avalanche awareness and if time permits
make a summit attempt.
